Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights SRHR

Sexual health is the integration of the somatic, emotional, intellectual, and social aspects of sexual being in ways that are positively enriching and that enhance personality, communication and love.” IPDC, International Population Develompment Conference. Report from ICPD. Cairo, 1994.

Reproductive health is defined by WHO as a state of physical, mental, and social well-being in all matters realting to the reproductive system at all stages of life. Reproductive health implies that people are able to have a satisfying and safe sex life and that they have the capability to reproduce and the freedom to decide if, when, and how often to do so. Implicit in this are the right of men and women to be informed and to have access to safe, effective, affordable, and acceptable methods of family planning of their choice, and the right to appropriate health-care services that enable women to safely go through pregnancy and childbirth. Reproductive health care is defined as the constellation of methods, techniques, and services that contribute health problems. It also includes sexual health, the purpose of which is the enhancement of life and personal realtions, and not merely counseling and care related to reproduction and sexually transmitted infections.”  The WHO Defintion of Reproductive Health. WHO, 1998.(Progress 45)

Sexual and reproductive health and rights

Women’s sexual and reproductive health is related to multiple human rights, including the right to life, the right to be free from torture, the right to health, the right to privacy, the right to education, and the prohibition of discrimination. The Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) have both clearly indicated that women’s right to health includes their sexual and reproductive health. This means that States have obligations to respect, protect and fulfill rights related to women’s sexual and reproductive health. The Special Rapporteur on the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health maintains that women are entitled to reproductive health care services, goods and facilities that are: (a) available in adequate numbers; (b) accessible physically and economically; (c) accessible without discrimination; and (d) of good quality [see report A/61/338].

EpC Epidemiologiskt Centrum Socialstyrelsen. Atrikelnr 2005-112-4. Publicerad juni 2005.

Definitions of sexual health, sexual rights, reproductive health and reproductive rights are based on existing international agreements. Sexual health refers to quality of life and personal relations, counselling and health care. Sexual rights include the right to all people to decide over their own bodies and sexuality.
Reproductive health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being in relation to the reproductive system and all its functions, and more than the absence of disease. Reproductive rights comprise the right of individuals to decide on the number of children they have and the intervals at wich they are born. Everyone must be able to exercise these rights without risk of discrimination, violence or coercion.”
